2008 Annual Conference: Building Global Competency October 2-4, 2008 Nittany Lion Inn University Park, Pennsylvania
More and more educators agree that, in order for Pennsylvania to be competitive in today’s global market, we need a workforce capable in languages, cultures, and business practices from around the world. International knowledge, skills, and abilities are needed in virtually every walk of life, in business, government, and beyond. Business negotiations transcend national borders; government policies evolve and flow based on an interconnected world; service organizations manage a complex mix of countries and cultures. Clearly, higher standards and priorities must be set for languages and international studies, but where do we set the bar that defines global competency? Competencies include a variety of appropriate skills and knowledge, from cross-cultural awareness to global business savvy, from managing uncertainty to adapting to change, from languages to international negotiations. In a world where interdependence has eclipsed self-sufficiency, academia seeks to define and describe the concept of global competency. This conference presents many perspectives on global competency, and proposes initiatives to that end. What happens in higher education in Pennsylvania can and will affect what happens in the rest of the world. Join us to explore the many ways to prepare our students for global leadership. As PaCIE enters its 39th year, we are continuing our proud tradition of strengthening, promoting and advocating for international education in the Commonwealth.
